Previous news item 07/02/2007 - Aruba Hi-winds 2007 update (Engels) Next news item |
The 21st edition of the Aruba Hi-winds was indeed a true Hi-winds event. With wind speeds up to 35 knots the past few days made finishing the course a big feet for a lot of competitors. The slalom course for the open, masters, juniors and women classes was a 7 bouy course with long laps. The whole class would start in one heat so the first mark was often approached by 10 sailers going full speed for the best position. The result was often spectacular with lots of crashes. Venezuelan Alexis showed superiority by winning most heats in the men. Berend made head turn with his hudge board and big sail (8.0) and still being very competitive. Robbert, Derek and Sander where very close together but after a few races Robbert began to controll his board and became superior in boardspeed. Ingmar was in 5th place with some good 2nd and 3rd positions when he had to give up because of a knee injury in the freestyle practice. Luckily the injury isn't too serious and he'll be windsurfing in a few weeks. In the juniors Victor sailing on borrowed 10+ years old equipment consistently came in third or second after Payo and Yeager from Bonaire. Sten and Nick gave it their best shot and had some good results as well, beating Victor and occasionally.
The kid classes had their own course, which was more on the inside of the huts. The wind there was much less the outside. This became a mayor obstacle for our kids, since they are used to stronger winds with their small sails. Even so, they all had some great finishes. Gino in his first heats had to go up against 15 year olds, and he still beat some! He then was put into a more suitable class. All the kids did very well occasionally comming in on podium positions.
In the woman category it was a constant battle between Hilde and Janet from Aruba. Janet took the upperhand on the first day, but Hilde tied it on the second and won the third and sealed the victory by winning the long distance.

We would like to thank our sponsors for the possibility to compete in Aruba.
